About the sector
The online home and gardening market has become increasingly popular in recent years. Once an industry firmly grounded in bricks and mortar retail, consumers took longer to move over to online trade compared to other sectors. The increase in online trade was sped up significantly by COVID, with customers spending more time at home. This shift doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon either; consumers’ eyes have been opened to the convenience and product diversity available online. A new generation of younger customers have also become interested in gardening and taking greater pride in their homes, expanding the market considerably.
The businesses who were already online in 2020 took the lion’s share of this spike in business, but there’s still ample room to innovate and differentiate in the space as new propositions are brought to market.
Our client Muddy Trowel is a great example of this. Born during the first UK lockdown, the business was created to meet the needs of consumers stuck at home but desperate to make the most of their gardens, balconies and outdoor spaces. There was a lot of plant stock spoiling in garden centres, and Muddy Trowel was created to bridge this gap in the supply chain.
